A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” stated the national leader.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its role in public projects. They were executed at an accelerated speed, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition called for an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic initiatives.
